We spend a third of our lives sleeping, make it count.

For years, the JRCC Furniture Depot has been working with the local community to help its most vulnerable members. Every year, we give away more than five thousand pieces of furniture to those who need it most, including children, refugees, and people transitioning out of shelters. Many are surprised to learn that this program includes beds as well!

Beds – generally made up of bed frames, box springs and mattresses – are some of our clients’ most needed items, and we are proud to be able to provide them. Whether someone is looking for a queen, double, or twin-sized bed, the Furniture Depot staff is happy to assist in choosing a bed that will work best for our clients and their diverse needs. We even give away specialty beds like bunk beds, captain beds, and cribs!

Donors and clients alike are happy to learn that all the beds the Furniture Depot gives away are in good condition. Upon receiving bed donations, the Furniture Depot staff use our impressive steam room to deep clean the mattresses and box springs, ensuring that they are safe for our clients to sleep on. It is only then that the gently used bed parts are displayed and made available for selection.

Of course, none of this could be done without the help of our generous donors. All too often, used mattresses are thrown out and left to rot in landfills. Many people simply do not realize that mattress donation is an option. At the Furniture Depot, mattress donations are not just an eco-friendly option, but a necessity. When someone decides to donate a mattress to the Furniture Depot, it means that a child has a bed instead of sleeping on the floor.

Here at the JRCC Furniture Depot, we create stable and warm family homes by providing furniture for those in need. We strongly believe that beds, the cornerstones of the home, are an integral part of this process. If you or someone you know has beds and mattresses that are no longer needed, we urge you to please consider donating them to the Furniture Depot. By doing so, you are directly impacting the lives of the community’s most vulnerable members. By giving someone the stability of a bed to sleep on, you are ensuring that they can get up in the morning and take the steps they need not just to survive, but to flourish.

Blog Post #12: Environmental Awareness and Furniture Donation

The JRCC Furniture Depot has been a staple in the GTA community for years. It has been a great help and service to many in need and has received much recognition for the work it does. The donation and re-use of furniture not only benefits us in terms of a social service, from an environmental standpoint, the JRCC Furniture Depot has greatly made great strides in waste reduction and conservation. The past decade has seen a dramatic increase and focus on climate change and environmental sustainability and health and we are glad to see our organization offering practical solutions.

Very recently a climate emergency was declared in Toronto after 47 influential organizations, many officials, and citizens called for one. With much emphasis being put on waste management, recycling, and deforestation prevention, it is organizations such as the JRCC Furniture Depot that will be making a great difference in communities around the world. When someone decides to donate their furniture for re-use rather than throwing it out, the result is less landfill dumping and less trees being cut down to produce more furniture. The numbers speak for themselves, since 2014 we have served 10,000 clients and 3,200 households, resulting in over 17,000 pieces of furniture have been diverted from landfills and given to those in need thanks to the JRCC Furniture Depot. It is programs such as these that give a practical and efficient solutions to many of the climate issues arising today.

JRCC Furniture Depot Helping Syrian Refugees Start New Life in Toronto

TORONTO – The Syrian refugee crisis has captivated the conscience of Canadians from coast-to-coast. Many communities have stepped up to help those arriving from their war-torn homeland. The Jewish Russian Community Centre (JRCC) Furniture Depot, in collaboration with the Armenian community, will be providing recently arrived refugees with furniture, and other household items to help them settle into a new home on January 11.

The kick off the campaign to help these refugees will be launched on Jan 11 by inviting five families (2 from York Region & 3 from Toronto) to come to the Furniture Depot and select furniture on Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

“By helping refugees settle into a new home today, we’re building the foundation for success of new Canadians tomorrow,” stated Roi Aftabi, Director of Development at the JRCC Furniture Depot.

We would like extend our gratitude to the Hon. Peter Kent (PC MP Thornhill) for his support and solidarity to make this project a great success.

Volunteers and staff have been working to setup and operate the drop-off Centre, pick up donated items, setup the show room and arrange transportation to help refugees select items and move them to their new homes.
